Wilhelm von Bibra

In 1487, Lorenz wrote a letter of introduction to Pope Innocent VIII for his half brother Wilhelm who was being sent to the Vatican as an emissary of Archbishop Herman of Cologne.  In 1490, Wilhelm became ill when returning from Rome as an emissary of Kaiser Friedrich. Wilhelm’s tombstone is still to be seen in the Pelligrini Chapel of the Saint Anastasia Church in Verona.

“The noble and strict Wilhelm von Bibra, Knight of the Golden Spur, from the Duchy of Eastern Franconia, adviser of the most noble and invincible emperor, Frederick III. and his son Maximilian, the well-known Roman king, representative and envoy to our Holy Lord Innocent VIII, as well as Court Administrator and councilor of the Archbishop of Cologne, Elector Hermann. After completing his mission on the way home from Rome, he died in the famous city of Verona on August 28, 1490. May his soul rest in peace! “

Note the engraving from the Family History has with highlights such as the hilt of the sword in gold leaf. This is because Wilhelm was made a Knight of the Golden Spur which entitled him to have golden spurs and/or gold gilt armor.

In the painting, the painter, Wolfgang von Bibra, apparently didn’t pick
up on the significance of the color of the armor but did give him golden spurs.

Description: This delicate original antique print originates from ‘Costumes Historiques des XIIe, XIIIe, XIVe, et XVI siecles’ by Camille Bonnard published in Paris by A. Levy Fils 1860. This work was later continued by later continued by Duplessis ( 16th to 18th century). The images in these works have often served as examples after which theater and movie costumes were modelled.

Artists and Engravers: In 1827 Camille Bonnard began a monumental gallery of 13th to 15th century European costumes, published in 75 parts over the next two years, with beautiful hand-colored plates by Paul Mercuri.
